Netherlands freezes aid to Yemen
The cabinet has suspended most of its development aid to Yemen.
On Monday, Deputy Development Cooperation Minister Ben Knapen announced that all aid to institutions which have ties to the Yemeni government has been frozen.
In practice this means about 15 million euros out of a total amount of about 24 million euros of Dutch annual development aid to Yemen will not be paid out. Dutch aid to non-governmental organisations, for instance those active in the fields of sexual and reproductive health, will be continued. One of the government projects affected by the measure is a 3-million-euro project in the water sector.
According to the deputy minister, the measure is intended as a signal to the Yemeni regime, which has been cracking down hard on anti-government protesters. At least 15 people were killed and hundreds injured when security forces and pro-government protesters opened fire on protesters in the city Taiz.
