Netherlands condemns Sudan violence
Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has condemned the Sudanese military’s offensive in the town of Abyei and the suspension of the local administration as violations of the 2005 peace treaty and this year’s Kadugi agreements, to which the Netherlands was a witness.
Central government forces seized Abyei on Saturday. A spokesperson for the army of South Sudan, the SPLA, said on Sunday that thousands of civilians have fled the town.
The weekend’s events were preceded by violence on both sides. The Netherlands has appealed to both parties to settle their differences peacefully, in accordance with the peace treaty and a pronouncement of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2009.
Abyei is part of a disputed region between North and South Sudan. It status has to be settled before South Sudan becomes independent on 9 July.
