AMSTERDAM – The Netherlands and China reaffirmed their strong ties on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi signed a pledge to strengthen the two countries' relations in Beijing on Wednesday.

The two ministers met for 2.5 hours to discuss a number of issues, including the human rights situation in China, the foreign ministry announced. Verhagen is in China this week to mark 35 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Verhagen also asked China to take a more active role in solving the crisis in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Verhagen said Beijing should use its influence on the government in Khartoum to stop the crisis and improve human rights in the region.

The Netherlands is China's second largest trading partner. The countries maintain close contacts in the areas of agriculture, water management, science and culture.
