Official figures show nearly all young Dutch internet users had an account with a social networking website such as Hyves, Facebook or Twitter last year.

As many as 91 percent of people aged 16 to 25 were active on one of the sites in 2010, according to the Dutch statistics office. The number is the highest among European Union countries.

Young Dutch people mostly use the sites for exchanging information, writing each other messages, reading weblogs, joining in news groups, online discussion forums or chat rooms.

There is less use of the social network sites among older people. Only 54 percent of Dutch people between the ages of 25 and 55 who use the internet had an account with a one of the sites, and for those between 55 and 75, the number fell still further to 30 percent.
