AMSTERDAM – The Dutch Eredivision kicked off over the weekend with reigning champions PSV Eindhoven notching a 3-1 win against NEC Nijmegen at the Philips-stadion.

In one of the other main matches, Ajax Amsterdam defeated RKC Waalwijk 5-0.

But victory in the first league soccer match under new coach Henk ten Cate was not enough to help Ajax secure first place.

That position was claimed by AZ Alkmaar as it thrashed NAC Breda 8-1.

The other 'Big Three' team, Feyenoord, found itself on the wrong end of a 3-0 score against FC Groningen.

That match was played Groningen's new Euroborgstadion, already dubbed by fans the 'Green Hell'.
