National Queen's Day celebrations underway

30th April 2011, Comments 0 comments

The Dutch Royal Family are celebrating Queen Beatrix' official birthday in the southernmost province of Limburg. Accompanied by her sons, daughters in law and her sister Princess Margriet and her family, the Queen has arrived in the town of Thorn. Later in the day they will travel to the city of Weert.

Queen's Day is the royal family's annual occasion to meet the people face-to-face, and since her accession in 1980 Queen Beatrix has celebrated the day by visiting each of the 12 provinces in turn.

All over the Netherlands celebrations began last night, with street parties, concerts and performances. The day itself is marked by children's flea markets in city centres, more street parties and concerts, and a general carefree atmosphere.
