AMSTERDAM – The Dutch Railways NS want to postpone the introduction of the OV chip pass for the train. The NS plans to notify the Ministry of Transport and Public Works of this soon, the Telegraaf writes. No reason is being given for the requested delay. The planned date of introduction is 1 January 2009.

The delay would be a significant setback for state secretary for transport Tineke Huizinga (ChristenUnie), the newspaper writes, because all transport companies made firm agreements on when the system would be introduced.

The bus, tram and metro companies are reportedly worried that customers will be far less receptive to the pass if it is not introduced on all transport at the same time. The OV chip pass should become the method of payment for all buses, trams, metros and trains in the Netherlands. Customers will be able to add credit to the card and use it for all types of transport nationally.
