UTRECHT – The Nederlandse Spoorwegen wants to make travelling in the Randstad more expensive than in the rest of the country beginning next year, NS marketing and sales director Philippe Smit said on Thursday.

First-class fares all over the country are also slated to go up.

The NS plans to raise ticket prices by an average 1.8 percent as of 1 January 2006.

On nine busy Randstad routes travellers will have to pay more than they do in the rest of the country.

A single ticket in the conurbation will cost about 10 cents more on average than one in Groningen or Limburg.

The NS says this is fairer because it transports the most passengers in the Randstad and the choice of trains is much larger there. Its costs are also highest in the Randstad.

The company is still discussing its plan with the Ministry of Transport. If is is rejected, the NS says it will raise prices around the country by an average of 2.8 percent.
