AMSTERDAM — Embattled Dutch Rail NS might operate fewer trains outside peak-hour periods from 2005 onwards as part of massive timetable changes aimed at reducing costs, it was revealed on Tuesday.

NS travellers group NSR also told the company's management that conductors and engineers must spend more time in the train. It said the chance of a passenger coming across a conductor must increase from 45 to 60 percent in 2008.

The NSR said the rail operator needed to drastically adjust its timetable to cut costs, otherwise the continuity of passenger travel would be placed in danger, NOS reported.
