THE HAGUE –  The Netherlands will continue to take a hard line against Iran, despite reports that it stopped its nuclear weapons programme some time ago, the NRC Handelsblad reports.

US intelligence services announced earlier this week that Iran stopped developing nuclear weapons in 2003. As a result the question has arisen in the international community of whether the sanctions against Tehran should remain in effect. China and Russia have doubts, while countries like France and Great Britain do not. The US announced immediately that it wanted to continue sanctions.

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen says there is no reason whatsoever to go back on the position that Iran poses "not an acute, but a potential danger."

The country still refuses to comply with UN resolutions. "So I do not see any reason to withdraw support from a third resolution for sanctions," Verhagen said.
