AMSTERDAM – The EU is taking the Netherlands to the EU Court of Justice because the emergency hotline (112) is still not able to locate where calls come from.

As a result citizens needing assistance are in danger of not getting help on time, says EU Commissioner for Information Technology Viviane Reding.

Because of this situation, emergency workers have to spend precious time searching for the site of an accident or disaster. The EU commissioner already warned the Netherlands almost a year ago that the situation needed to be remedied.

The national police force (KLPD) is not planning to start using a new centre with improved identification capability for the incoming calls in Dreibergen until October.

Italy, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovakia are also falling short in this regard.
