A couple, charged with stealing manholes, are being held in an eastern town.

RENKUM—The mystery of the disappearing manholes has been solved in Renkum, Gelderland. A 31 year-old man without a permanent place of residence and a 32 year-old woman from Doorwerth were arrested Tuesday for theft in Doorwerth, Oosterbeek, and other neighboring towns.

Sometime last month over 20 manholes disappeared. In three of the instances, the holes measured .75 meters and more than three meters deep. The situation posed a life-threatening risk to pedestrians, but no one is reported to have fallen in one of the holes.

After report of the thefts a number of the iron lids were recovered at a recycling company in the area. Eye-witnesses led police to the duo, who were both found Tuesday morning in the woman’s residence. Police have yet to determine from the couple where the remaining lids can be found.
