Music to steer cyclist in right direction

National newspaper reports that students at the Technical University of Eindhoven have developed a smartphone application which utilises music to guide cyclists to their destination.

The programme uses the smartphone’s navigation system to give musical directions. When the cyclist is to turn left the volume in his left earphone goes up and vice versa.

One of the students, Matthijs Zwinderman, said on Friday that the app allows cyclists to keep their eyes on the road. He said users would experience the application as if the music were coming from the direction they needs to go in. The cyclist will also be listening to his own favourite music, and the app can reportedly be used anywhere on the planet.

Owners of smartphones with the Android operating system can download the new app from the end of next week; the iPhone app will follow later.
