AMSTERDAM – The gates around the Utrecht neighbourhood of Ondiep will be removed on Monday. The Utrecht municipality, police and public prosecution department decided this after the area was calm on Sunday night.

The temporary ban on assembly has been lifted and those wishing to enter the area will no longer be searched. The police will continue to monitor the neighbourhood however.

The neighbourhood was blocked off by police for most of last week in an attempt to keep order. Riots broke out early in the week after police killed a 54-year-old resident. Ongoing dissatisfaction with the failure of police to address problems of social order in the neighbourhood led to disturbances, though most of those rioting last week came from outside of Utrecht.
