AMSTERDAM – The Amersfoort and Enschede municipalities are not happy with the neighbourhoods Minister for Living, Neighbourhoods and Integration Ella Vogelaar has chosen to include on a list of 40 problem areas that will now receive extra funding.

Both municipalities are pleased at the attention and initiative shown by the minister, but think she has gone wrong with the choices for the list.

The Mekkelholt/Deppenbroek area in Enschede is on the list "It's not all that clear why this neighbourhood was chosen," said a spokesperson for Enschede. "A number of other areas could really use the investment more."

Nor is Amersfoort happy with the choice of Kruiskamp. "If we could have chosen we would have designated Liendert," said a spokesperson for the municipality.

Both cities plan to talk with the minister about possible changes to the plans.

The Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) already said on Thursday it wanted an explanation of the criteria used to draw up the list.

"We want transparency on why exactly these 40 neighbourhoods were chosen so that all municipalities with disadvantaged neighbourhoods can figure out why their area was not included in the extra investment plans," said a spokesperson.
