THE HAGUE – There is much in the Netherlands that inspires hope and confidence. Businesses and consumers are optimistic and there are hopeful signs in areas other than the economy as well. Queen Beatrix said this in the address from the throne today on Prinsjesdag.

Our country is also facing substantial challenges as a result of the ageing of the workforce and the shortage of labour in care and education.

The cabinet wants to make extra efforts to increase tolerance and respect in society.

The budget will show a surplus, not only next year but in the years to follow. "We will be saving for the future," the queen said.

The cabinet wants to work towards a cleaner and thriftier economy and tax consumption and pollution. This will make lower labour costs possible.
