Most former farmland used for new houss

Over 80 percent of the 85,000 hectares of farmland that were released for development between 1996 and 2008 was used to build residential areas, industrial estates or traffic junctions, newspaper reports.

Just 7,000 hectares of agricultural land were converted into nature, the paper says, quoting a study it commissioned from the Agricultural Economic Institute. Around 8,000 hectares were converted into flooding zones.

The study’s findings belie suggestions made by Agriculture Deputy Minister Henk Bleker that environmental groups have been claiming valuable farmland.
