Most Dutch for prenuptial agreements

A majority of people in the Netherlands believe the property of married couples should not automatically come under joint ownership, says broadcaster RTL. Its report is based on a survey commissioned by the VFAS association of divorce lawyers.

At the moment, Dutch law assumes joint ownership of property and couples getting married who don't want this have to enter into a legal agreement dividing ownership between them. In most countries, some kind of prenuptial agreement is fixed by law.

Last year, a majority of MPs decided that Dutch marriage laws needed to be overhauled in relation to joint ownership. From January 2012, new legislation will limit the extent of joint ownership in marriage to some extent but will not radically change the existing situation.
