The Russian government has announced that it will refuse imports of Dutch apples and pears starting in the middle of April.

MOSCOW - According to Moscow, pesticide levels in apples and pears from the Netherlands are too high.

Russian regulations on pesticide residue are far lower than in the European Union.

The association of apple and pear growers in the Netherlands, Frugi Venta, says it hopes that it is just a temporary measure.

However, the organisation says it does not know how long the import ban will last.

It is also not clear if the import ban applies just Dutch apples and pears or if it also applies to fruit that is transshipped via the Netherlands.

Talks between the Russian authorities and the ministry of agriculture will take place before the ban goes into effect.
