Moroccans backing Holocaust ceremony

A number of Moroccan organisations are urging Moroccans in the Netherlands to attend the annual Holocaust Memorial Day in Amsterdam on Sunday.

AMSTERDAM - The organisations hope that by paying respect to the Holocaust victims Jews will show understanding for the anger caused among Muslims by Israel's three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The move follows a plea by Integration Minister Eberhard van der Laan calling on Muslims to attend Sunday's Holocaust ceremony.

On Friday Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende met leaders of the Muslim and Jewish communities.

He said both groups had pledged to show respect and tolerance towards each other.

The prime minister underlined the importance of Sunday's ceremony being held in a dignified manner.
