AMSTERDAM  - A group of about 10 Moroccan fathers in the city district of Bos en Lommer in Amsterdam-West are going to offer parenting courses to other parents. A spokesperson for the city district announced this on Wednesday. Bos en Lommer is going to help the men in their efforts.

The fathers sought contact with the local government after the recent unrest in Amsterdam-West. For several nights in a row cars were set on fire after police had shot a 22-year-old Moroccan man, Bilal B. B. had stabbed two police officers shortly before the shooting. Politicians have been calling on parents to pay more attention to disciplining their children. The fathers now want to demonstrate that they can handle their children.

The men also plan to organise theme meetings on topics like internships, for instance. They want young people to have more help in finding such placements.

The spokesperson says that the city district will help the parents come in contact with the right agencies. She stressed that the plans are still in an early stage. The fathers still have to form a core group to officially draw up their plans. In two weeks they will meet to work out the details of the plans.
