AMSTERDAM – The number of violent robberies at shops has increased during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2006. By the end of May the Netherlands Retail Platform (PDN) had registered 323 robberies, compared to 290 in the same period last year.

Secretary of the Platform on Shop Crime Sander van Golberdinge said this on Thursday on Radio 1 Journaal.

The large cities saw the greatest increase. There have also been more robberies at petrol stations. Police think the rise in the number of robberies is due to increased activity by foreign gangs in the Netherlands.

The PDN worries that shop owners in problem neighbourhoods will have to close down because of the robberies. "The small shop owner does not have the money for security cameras, electronic safes and guards," says Van Golberdinge. He is urging that shop owners in vulnerable areas be offered a tax break.
