THE HAGUE – Young drivers may be provided additional training from 2008. The courses are aimed at teaching young people to drive less aggressively and to prepare them for unpredictable and dangerous road situations.

The Association of Insurers is going to set up trial projects with the provinces and driving schools. An experiment has already been successfully carried out in four provinces.

Research shows that drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 are four times more likely to be involved in an accident. The special training will cost EUR 50 and be offered on a voluntary basis. The courses will partly be subsidised by the provinces and the insurance companies.

2,000 young people have taken part in the trial courses in Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen and Limburg since the experiment was started two years ago.
