VOORBURG  - Some 29 million people from within the country and abroad spend a night in a hotel, pension, or other accommodation in the Netherlands in 2006, an increase of 10 percent compared to 2005. This emerged from figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Monday.

More Germans came to the Netherlands in 2006 – their numbers had been decreasing in previous years. And for the first time more than a million Belgians came to the country in 2006, and almost 2 million British tourists.

Most of the foreign guests stayed in hotels. More than half of the Dutch visiting different parts of the country stayed in a hotel, and a quarter stayed in a holiday bungalow. Most of the visitors at campgrounds (75 percent) were Dutch.
