VOORBURG – The number of students of minority background in higher education has increased to almost 125,000 in the 2006-2007 school year, this figure is twice the number that was at university 12 years ago.

This emerged on Monday from figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Students of minority background comprise now more than a fifth of all students in higher education.

Particularly the number of non-Western ethnic women in higher education has increased. During the 2006-2007 school year some 38,000 non-Western ethnic women were registered in higher education. That is more than three times more than during the 2005-2006 school year.
