More cuts in Dutch development aid possible

Dutch Deputy Foreign Minister says he doesn’t rule out further cuts in Dutch development aid.

“Under pressure everything becomes fluid”, Mr Knapen said when asked if he foresaw any more cuts.

Under the current plan, Dutch development aid for this year and 2012 will be reduced by one billion euros.

Geert Wilders’ xenophobic Freedom Party, which provides the minority cabinet with a majority in parliament, insists that any further budget cuts should be realised by reducing development aid.

Mr Knapen said he preferred not to speculate on the mater but added that if the need arose the agreed plans would be reviewed.
