AMSTERDAM - Rita Verdonk thinks that the liberal VVD has become invisible in the immigration debate. Her party has "lost the ball" to Geert Wilders' Freedom Party PVV.

The Telegraaf reports that she said this during a speech at a dinner in Utrecht. The former immigration minister levelled sharp criticism at the VVD's political direction.

"The VVD is invisible in the immigration debate and we must do something about that," Verdonk reportedly said. The MP did stress during the dinner with the Utrecht VVD branch that she staunchly supports party leader Mark Rutte.

A spokesperson for Rutte told the paper that the politician did not wish to comment. Verdonk's criticism comes on the eve of the VVD conference scheduled for Saturday. The conference will discuss, among other things, the Dekker committee's report on the electoral defeat.

Verdonk was responsible for immigration affairs in the previous government. She is currently a spokesperson for her party on youth affairs and education.
