AMSTERDAM – There are more clean beaches and marinas in the Netherlands than a year ago. A total of 44 beaches and 47 marinas were awarded the Blue Flag this year, that is six more flags than last year.

The Netherlands is one of the leaders in Europe, says motorists' association ANWB.

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised programme that awards flags to beaches and marinas that satisfy certain criteria for water quality, safety and environmental management.

The Blue Flag is valid for one year. Checks are carried out each year to decide whether the recognition will be renewed.
