People with a Dutch Railways (NS) peak discount card or a public transport smart card from other companies can use them on the trains on Tuesday.

Utrecht – People with a Dutch Railways (NS) peak discount card or a public transport smart card from other companies can use them on the trains on Tuesday.

This means that 1.5 million people with a Dutch Railways (NS) peak discount card will be able to pay for their tickets using their tickets.

NS, who has been introducing the usage of different OV-chipcards in stages, made the announcement on Tuesday.

Since 1 October, people with anonymous chipcards have been able to use the cards on trains. Season ticket holders will make the switch next year.

The NS said about 25,000 train journeys have been made using the smart card since 1 October.

"This is beyond expectations," said a spokeswoman for the NS.

The NS expects more people to use the chipcard to increase gradually.
