More and more older Dutch alcoholics

The number of older alcoholics is going to grow explosively in the coming years, a Dutch psychologist warns.

Baby boomers who retire tend to fall into a depression and increasingly resort to alcohol to deal with it, says Harrie van Gestel of rehab centre Novadic Kentron in an interview with newspaper Spits.

Over the past ten years, the number of people aged over 55 who are in rehab has doubled to nearly 11,000.

It is partly the result of the ageing population, he concedes, but rehab centres are convinced that is not the only cause. cl
