THE HAGUE – There were more children living in poverty in the Netherlands in 2006 than in the previous years. The 2000 to 2005 period showed a decrease in this number. This has emerged from the report 'Children Count' from Unicef and the National Fund for Child Assistance.

In 2005 more than 239,000 children were living in a family on benefits; in 2006 that number increased by about 3,000. The Schepenbuurt in Leeuwarden has the highest concentration of children living in families on welfare.

The situation of children in the Netherlands has on the whole improved, according to the report. Youth unemployment is down and there are fewer teenage mothers.
