THE NETHERLANDS -- A first ever scientific study into the effects of global warming on the Dutch population says the phenomenon will lead to hundreds of extra deaths.
The report is compiled by several leading Dutch research institutes including the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Maastricht University and the government institute RIVM.
More people will suffer from asthma or allergies as more pathogenic organisms such as mites will survive the warmer winters.
Thousands of more people are expected to develop skin cancer or contract Lyme disease from tick bites.
The higher temperatures brought on by global warming also put elderly people at higher risk. Already, dozens of additional deaths occur every day during heat waves.
The researchers say they are not being alarmist. They feel the Dutch health services will be able to cope with the increase in the number of sick people.
