The Netherlands Internet Domain Registration Foundation SIDN says it gave out more domain names than ever last year.

Since 1996, it has been responsible for issuing all the domain names which end with ‘.nl’. In its annual report, SIDN says it registered 514,230 new domain names in 2010, bringing the total to 4,192,454. Getting on for 1,500 new domain names are being issued daily.

The first months of 2011 have carried on the trend, with the number of registrations increasing even quicker. “The tally is now around 4.3 million. This means ‘.nl’ is in third place among the more than 250 country domains worldwide,” says SIDN director Roelof Meijer. He says it's a sign of the success of the ‘.nl’ brand in particular, and of internet in the Netherlands in general.
