AMSTERDAM – Homeowners paid an average of EUR 631 in municipal housing costs last year. The property tax (OZB), sewer charges, and garbage collection costs rose 2.3 percent compared to the year previous.

This emerged from a survey from the Homeowners' Association (VEH), the Telegraaf writes on Monday.

The housing costs vary from municipality to municipality. The garbage collection charges for homeowners on Terschelling fell by 13.8 percent for instance, while households in Wijk bij Duurstede had to pay 8.2 percent more, the paper reports.

The OZB for homeowners in Bladel, Uitgeest and Liesveld rose 20.9, 18.6 and 14 percent, respectively. Manager of Collective Members' Interests at the VEH Nico Stolwijk attributed the increase to the fact that municipalities are now entitled to raise the OZB without limit, a measure which came into effect on 1 January.

"Freeing up the OZB rate allows a municipality to pass on its budget deficit to the residents."

Homeowners in Zevenaar pay the least, says the Telegraaf. The total housing charges there amount to EUR 414 per year.
