The defence ministry has paid an undisclosed amount of compensation to a Dutch citizen of African descent.

AMSTERDAM  -- He was arrested by the border police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after he became involved in an argument with a white man.

The black Dutchman was locked up for 17 hours without food or drink, while the white man was allowed to leave. Earlier, the national ombudsman ruled that the border police was guilty of discrimination and abuse of its powers.
