AMSTERDAM – The ministers decided not to visit the neighbourhood of Ondiep after an emphatic request from the Utrecht municipality that they refrain from doing so.

Riots broke out there at the beginning of this week after police shot and killed a 54-year-old neighbourhood resident on Sunday.

Deputy Prime Minister Wouter Bos announced this after the cabinet meeting on Friday. He said that all the ministers had inquired whether they were welcome.

"The authorities had their hands full," Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said. He did stress that Ella Vogelaar (minister for living, neighbourhoods and integration) had been in close contact with Utrecht throughout.
