AMSTERDAM — The husband of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment Minister Sybilla Dekker died unexpectedly on Friday morning.

Constant van Gestel, the 66-year-old husband of the Liberal VVD minister, was admitted to hospital in San Francisco during a business trip last week. Dekker then flew to the US.

But both she and Van Gestel returned to The Hague with medical staff on Wednesday morning. The man was then admitted to the Bronovo Hospital in The Hague, where he eventually died.

Van Gestel was a commissioner of various companies and chairman of the childcare industry association, Branchevereniging Ondernemers in de Kinderopvang.

Environment State Secretary Pieter Van Geel will take over Minister Dekker's duties for the coming period, news website nu.nl reported.
