AMSTERDAM – Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven wants to protect the Dutch energy network if energy companies plan to enter the foreign market. She promised this to Parliament on Tuesday in response to the merger plans of Nuon and Essent.

The two energy companies want to merge and in doing so become an important player on the international market. But as soon as they cross the border they must split up into separate firms to manage the power network and supply electricity, the minister says. The power network must then remain safely in government hands.

It is still not clear whether the Nuon-Essent merger will actually go through. The Dutch competition watchdog NMa still has to give its approval for the deal.
