Minister opposes return of party drug testing at festivals
Health minister Edith Schippers said on Tuesday she opposes reintroducing drugs testing at festivals so partygoers can find out what is in the pills they are taking.
'These fast tests only look for active ingredients such as MDMA and say nothing about the quantity or if there are other substances,’ Schippers said on Tuesday, in answer to MPs questions.
Calls for the reintroduction of testing have been made following the drugs related deaths of three people at the recent Amsterdam Dance Event.
Schippers pointed out that people who take pills can have them tested at the Trimbos institute in advance.
Meanwhile, the Parool newspaper is campaigning for festival organisers to ensure there is enough free water available during their events.
Under Amsterdam by-laws, people who are granted a special events licence have to ensure one source of water for every 150 people but this rule is being widely flouted, the paper says.
