URUZGAN - Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders has opened a new school in Tarin Kowt, the capital of the Afghan province of Uruzgan.

At the opening Mr Koenders presented the school with a bag of volleyballs and a volleyball net.

After kite flying, volleyball is one of Afghanistan's most popular sports.

The school has been built with the aid of a Dutch contribution to the education programme Equip.

The furniture and teaching material have been provided by UNICEF.

In Uruzgan, 50,000 children are now going to school again, most of them boys.

According to the provincial authorities, there are still too few women teachers.

However, this year a girls' school is also to be built in Tarin Kowt, with money collected by the parents of a Dutch soldier who was killed in Afghanistan.

They raised the funds in conjunction with the charity Save the Children.
