Minister defends Dutch football legislation

Sports Minister Edith Schippers distanced herslef on Monday from critics of legislation passed earlier this year designed to deal with football violence. With many saying the law is too soft, Ms Schippers went on the defensive arguing that “the ink on the legislation is only just dry”.

The police have been especially critical of what they perceive to be too soft legislation to deal with soccer hooligans. The populist Freedom Party PVV is already calling for the law to be strengthened to bring it more in line with British legislation which is considered extremely tough.

However Ms Schppers has told MPs: “If the law doesn’t work, we’ll have to tighten it up; but let’s first see how it does.” She described it as “messy” and “a shame” that MPs were calling for the law to be revised so soon after its introduction.
