Minister condemns Syrian cartoonist attack

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has expressed horror at the attack carried out on Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat. His ministry is to bring the matter up with Syria’s ambassador to the Netherlands.

Members of Syria’s opposition report that Ferzat was badly beaten by members of the country’s security services, who are said to have concentrated on injuring the artist’s arms and hands.

Ferzat won the Dutch Prince Claus Award in 2002. He is known for his fierce criticism of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom he has targetted in a number of cartoons over recent months.
