Minister concerned over Chinese activist

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal plans to urge the European Union to raise the case of Chinese human rights activist Ni Yulan and her husband with the Chinese authorities. In response to questions by the Labour Party on the case of Yulan, who is disabled and being held in prison, the minister wrote: her situation is worrying.

The activist lost the use of her legs in 2002 after being severely mishandled by the Chinese police. In April she was re-arrested with her husband, since then no-one has heard from the couple. Minister Rosenthal says Yulan and her husband have now had contact with their lawyers and their case is being considered by the Public Prosecution Office in China.

European Union High Representative for foreign affairs, Catherine Ashton, and the United States have already expressed concerns about the deteriorating human rights situation in China.
