Minister calls for digital schoolbooks
Dutch Education Minister Ronald Plasterk proposes a Wikipedia-like project for teachers to share their materials.4 December 2008
AMSTERDAM - Education Minister Ronald Plasterk wants to introduce digital schoolbooks during the remaining term of the current cabinet.
He is proposing a Wikipedia-like project to enable teachers to develop their own teaching materials and place them on the internet. They will then be available free of charge to anyone who wants to read them.
However, only teachers will be permitted to add to or alter the material.
Mr Plasterk believes the project will benefit the quality of education but emphasises that teachers will not be required to contribute material. He expects the idea will eventually lead to the need for fewer printed schoolbooks.
A wiki is a page, or collection of web pages, enabling anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
