Mini-city Madurodam to get birthday facelift

One of the Netherlands' best-known tourist attractions, Madurodam, is to undergo a metamorphosis over the winter.

In celebration of its sixtieth anniversary in 2012, the mini-city is to be given a major overhaul, a spokeswoman said on Monday.

The detailed miniatures of a wide range of famous Dutch landmarks at a scale of 1:25 will still form the central attraction. But in future they will be divided into three themed areas: ‘water as friend and enemy’, ‘old city centres’ and ‘The Netherlands as inspiration for the world’.

Madurodam was constructed after the Second World War in memory of the resistance hero George Maduro. Since it’s opening in 1952, the model city has welcomed more than 50 million visitors. It will be closed for refurbishment from 1 November 2011 to 31 March 2012.
