Millions stolen in Dutch childcare fraud

Police and tax office investigators in Amsterdam have unearthed a major case of fraud with child day-care benefit payments. Raids were carried out at four addresses earlier this week. Five people are suspected of having made many fraudulent applications for the payments for themselves and others.

It is thought a large group of parents in receipt of day-care benefit handed over a percentage of the money to the suspects. The amount claimed by fraud is said to be in the millions of euros.

Deputy Finance Minister Frans Weekers says he’s incensed by the scam. “It’s too awful that people have abused child day-care allowance in this way. I have ordered the police and tax authorities to come down extra hard on this sort of fraud.”

Both the tax office and the social affairs ministry plan to make risk assessments of the chances of this kind of fraud hitting their operations.
