ROTTERDAM – The Rotterdam metro station Wilhelminaplein was evacuated on Friday afternoon because of smoke.
At around 1.15pm, an escalator in the recently opened tunnel leading to the Luxor Theater suddenly stopped and began to smoke.
As a precaution, 30-40 people were asked to leave the station.
The metro continued running but did not stop at Wilhelminaplein station.
The situation was under control by around 1.45pm, a spokeswoman for the RET transport company said.
The tunnel to the theatre was to remain closed Thursday night for an investigation.
The metro station is situated below the court building at Kop van Zuid.
