AMSTERDAM – Dutch men are becoming fathers later and later. In 2006 24,000 newborns – 14 percent of all newborns – were born to a couple in which the father was forty or older, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
In 1996 this percentage was just 9 percent. The study also shows that the number of men having children with a younger partner is on the rise.
The number of young fathers has fallen sharply. Just 3 percent of fathers is now below the age of 25. The average age for a father is 34.2 years, according to the figures from the CBS. The average age for mothers is 31.1 years.
