AMSTERDAM -  The Dutch military police found 58 puppies and 8 kittens packed in crates in the trunk of a car during a routine check in Heerlen on Thursday.

The two Czech men travelling in the car were arrested, the National Animal Protection Inspectorate (LID) announced.

The inspectorate said the men had certainly broken the law since most of the puppies were younger than eight weeks old. Animals of that age are only allowed to be transported if the mother is with them.

"And the mother was not there," said a spokesperson for the LID. The spokesperson also said the incident was an example of the illegal dog trade in Eastern Europe in which "animals are bred under bio-industrial conditions."
