Media anger at Dutch-Turkish death
The media in Turkey have taken up the case en masse of a Dutch-Turkish man who died after becoming unwell in a police cell in Beverwijk, a town north of Amsterdam.
The family of 22-year-old Ihsan Gürz from Heemskerk near Beverwijk say he died as a result of police violence during his arrest in the early hours of Sunday. Officers were responding to a call about an incident in a Beverwijk snack bar.
Turkish media have given extensive coverage to the family’s side of the story and are suggesting there were racist motives behind the affair. Dutch police are refusing to comment until an investigation into what happened has been concluded.
